Rainbow is located in the Mallee, between two major lake systems, Lake Hindmarsh and Lake Albucutya. The Rainbow and Districts Landcare group is on the boundary between the Mallee Catchment Management Authority and the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and the shires of Hindmarsh and Yarriambiack. Local priorities include ongoing pest plant and animal control programs along with a community focus on the development of the Yaapeet community artificial wetland. A wetland maintained by storm water run-off from the township of Yaapeet.
